AUDI – DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF)

If you drive a diesel car then it is likely you have heard the term DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter before, but not everyone actually knows what this filter does. Here we explain what exactly it does and the common symptoms and outcomes of a blocked DPF.

So what is a DPF?

The DPF is a a filter located within the exhaust system, and has been included in all diesel vehicles since around 2010. Whether your diesel is a Mercedes Benz, BMW or Volkswagen, if it is from the last 10 years, it should have a DPF installed. The purpose of this filter is to reduce the emissions, but as it traps these particles it can become blocked and result in a range of issues. If you have been experiencing excessive smoke, lack of power, reduced fuel economy, issues with your turbo or your car has been harder to start, then it could be caused by a blocked DPF.

What are the solutions?

Go for a long drive

As your DPF is working to reduce emissions from your vehicle, it will capture soot and become full and potentially blocked. These filters are designed to burn off this excess soot, otherwise they will need to be cleaned out or even replaced. The simplest way clean out your filter is get out of the traffic go for a long country drive. This gives your car a chance to heat up and burn off these particles. It is becoming increasingly common to have a blocked DPF due to city driving and increased traffic conditions. Get your diesel out on the open road!

Cleaning or replacement

If your DPF is seriously blocked, and beyond going for a long drive then it may need to be professionally cleaned or replaced. This option is more costly than simply burning off the excess by going for a drive, but it is something that you should address as soon as possible. If left unaddressed, it will most certainly lead to a range of other problems at get worse over time.
