AUDI QUATTRO

Quattro is the Audi’s all-wheel drive system and can be found in various models within the Audi range. The system was first developed in the 80’s for the Quattro rally car, but now the name has been applied to many different AWD models. Quattro can be found in almost all Audi models today, including the popular Q3, Q5, Q7, A3, A4 and A5 vehicles.

What does it do?

The quattro 4-wheel drive system distributes the work across all four tyres, this results in greater grip and cornering than a two-wheel drive vehicle. This has some positive safety elements too, as it is not as easy to lose traction. There is a range of advantages of having extra grip from an all-wheel drive system, from off road adventures to needing that extra bit of traction in the wet or icy conditions.

There are three different variants in the quattro system, with the two most common featuring on the A and Q series while the third is exclusive to Audi’s high performance vehicles. The standard system splits the engine power sending 60% to the rear wheels until it needs to shift the balance. It is designed to have the feel of a rear wheel drive with the benefits of an all-wheel drive car. The TT quattro is a little different and can be found in the smaller hatchbacks, this system almost exclusively powers the front wheels and only diverts power to the rear wheels when the front begins to loose grip.

Common Issues

Overall he quattro system tends to have rave reviews, but there are some common problems to be aware of with your car. The majority of problems with the system will be with the transfer case and can ultimately lead to engine failure if left untreated. With regular servicing and maintenance checks Auto Studio can diagnose any potential problems and keep your car running at optimum performance.

Leaking Seals

In some cases, the seals on the transfer case can become worn and dry and begin to leak.  This can lead to grinding noises and if enough lubrication is lost over time will result in damage to the inner components of the transfer case. If you have any concerns about your vehicle then the experienced staff are always happy to give your vehicle a complete check.

Slipping Gears

Serious problems with the transfer case can lead to slipping gears. If this is happening it means that the gears have worn to the point that they can no longer stay engaged. This can be a problem that can progress slowly over time and is should be inspected at the first sign of the problem.
