BMW: 3 Series

BMW: 3 Series

The BMW 3 series is a compact executive vehicle that has been getting produced since 1975, with many generations having been released since the initial launch. The series began with only a 2-door coupe, but quickly expanded to include a large range of convertibles, sedans and hatchbacks with a multitude of door varieties. Today you won’t find a 3 series convertible or coupe though, as these models were further developed and became the basis of the BMW 4 series.

The 3 Series is one of BMW’s best sellers, available in petrol and diesel, and is accountable for approximately 30% of BMW’s car sales. The main competitors for the 3 Series include the Audi A4 and the Mercedes Benz C-Class.

Common Issues

Overall the 3 series is an extremely popular car, and with regular maintenance and servicing can be an enjoyable luxury car, with many years of reliable driving. But here are some of the more common problems to look out for with the BMW 3 series.

Crankshaft Sensor

It is common in some 2018 models to have problems with the crankshaft sensor, forcing the vehicle to enable an emergency reduced power mode. Some of the signs for this can include an illuminated check engine light, a lack of power, stalling, spluttering or misfiring. If you are experiencing any of these issues in your car, then book in a service at Auto Studio in Adelaide.

Power Steering

In models up until 2015, it is not uncommon for the power steering pump to fail. Signs that there could be an issue with your power steering pump include a heavy feeling when driving or it is hard to turn, excessive vibrations or scraping feeling on the tyres or steering column. The experienced mechanics at Auto Studio can easily assist with a full power steering check, diagnosing any issues and replace your power steering pump if needed.

Fuel Pump

Issues with the 3 series fuel pump are more common in models produced in 2013 and 2014. Problems with the fuel pump can cause major performance issues, and result in misfires, engine splutters, loss of power, trouble starting and stalling. If you are experiencing any of these problems, then you may need to get your fuel pump inspected. Auto Studio can check your fuel system, diagnose any issues and repair any problems with your vehicle.

No Spare Tyre

While this is not necessarily an issue, it is something to be aware of. The BMX 3 series does not have a spare wheel, or designated space to carry a spare and are equip with run-flat tyres. As the name suggests, these tyres are designed to run when flat, therefore eliminating the need to carry a spare but they do have some limitations. When driving with a flat tyre, you cannot exceed a speed of 80km, or travel a distance further than 80km. This can of course become problematic for long distance travel.
