BMW: X-Drive

The BMW X-Drive all-wheel drive system was first introduced in 2003 and is now featured on models such as the X1, X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7. X-Drive is an intelligent all-wheel drive system, and it is able to distribute 100% of the torque to either front or rear axles via its unique electric centre clutch. This system helps with better and sharper vehicle handling and reduced wheel-spin during cornering.

The purpose of the X drive system is designed to improve traction on slippery surfaces such as ice and improve overall vehicle handling. It includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), this assists with over or under steering, and applies brakes individually to the necessary wheels. The proactive electronic driving systems included with the X-Drive prevents and eliminates slips, slides and wheel-spins all together rather than correcting them when they occur. It can implement Corner Brake Control (CBS) as required to help turn the car more effectively on a difficult or high intensity corners and can change the stiffness of the suspension dampers to suit the corner.

Common Problems

The X Drive system is in line with the best all-wheel drive systems available and comparable to others found in BMW’s premium competitors such as Audi, Mercedes Benz and Land Rover, and is considered superior to those in the lower end of the market. With regular vehicle maintenance and servicing, your X-drive system should continue to function with optimal performance, but here are some key problems to be aware of.

Transfer Case

The Transfer Case is the core component of the X-drive system and there have been reports of this needing to be replaced due to a failed chain within. Signs of a potential problem with the transfer case include vibrations and juddering on acceleration and it is recommended that the transfer case oil is replaced approximately every 100,000 km’s. The friendly and experienced mechanics at auto studio can easily add this as part of your regular service.

Error Message

There are numerous reports of various error messages and illuminated check engine lights referring to elements of the X-drive system. These messages range from ‘DSC and X-Drive malfunction’ to ‘Chassis Stabilisation and traction’ error messaging. In most cases these problems seem to resolve themselves and go away after restarting the vehicle. It is said that these errors can be caused by the battery not being charged correctly. If you have experienced any error messaging or your check engine light has become illuminated, book your vehicle in with Auto Studio and we can assist in diagnosing and resolving any issues.
