BMW X3
The BMW X3 is a mid-sized luxury SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) that first hit Adelaide shores back in 2003. It’s based on the same platform as the BMW 5 series, and comes in both front wheel drive (sDrive) and all wheel drive (xDrive).
BMW created the X3 to compete with the Mercedes GLK (now called the GLC). In terms of size and price position, the BMW X3 sits above the smaller X1 and X2, and under the X5, X6, X7 and X8.
What do the numbers mean after the ‘X’ in BMW SUV models?
BMW uses odd and even numbers to differentiate between two styling variations. Odd numbers X1, X3, X5 and X7 are models with more traditional SUV shapes, meaning they’re more ‘boxy’ and staunch. Even numbers X2, X4, X6 and X8 are all similar in specifications and interior styling to their odd number siblings, however they feature more sporty coupé styling. Essentially the boot space is a little smaller as the roof curve comes down to the tail as opposed to the more square boot as evident in the even numbered models. The even numbered models are usually a little more expensive.
What are some service issues that might present in a BMW X3?
As an expert and experienced BMW X3 repair and service centre in Adelaide, our experienced team have serviced thousands of vehicles and would love to assist with any issues you might be having. Here are some common faults you might encounter if you own a BMW X3.
BMW X3 rattles and noise
These issues are very common and although they’re likely not dangerous, they can be super annoying! Are you experiencing a rattling noise from the sunroof, doors or windows? There might be a problem with a seal and that’s something we can repair easily for you. If there’s an engine noise, this may be caused by a problem with the timing chain and it’s best to get this repaired ASAP as failure to service may result in severe damage and pose a safety issue.
Engine oil leaking
Not just a problem with the BMW X3, leaking engines is a common issue in all cars and is commonly caused by valve covers deteriorating from normal wear-and-tear. In the hot Adelaide summer, the extreme heat can cause the plastic valve covers to crack, contributing to the leak. If you’ve exceeded 120,000km then engine leaks are more evident.
Coolant oil leaking
If your BMW X3 is overheating, you’ll likely notice coolant leaking from your engine / radiator. This issue can be costly to repair and cause significant damage to the engine. Please contact us if you notice any coolant leaks!
Overall, the BMW X3 is a reliable car and the issues listed above are common on other similar vehicles such as the Audi Q5 or Mercedes-Benz GLC. Preventative maintenance of your vehicle is always the best solution and we’d love to talk to you to help reduce costly repairs due to lack of regular service.
