WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MERCEDES BENZ 4MATIC
Mercedes Benz 4MATIC is an all-wheel drive system, and can be found in various models across the range. It was developed in the late 80s, but is now up to its fourth generation and has seen great improvements since its inception.
What does Mercedes Benz 4MATIC do?
4MATIC assists with traction in slippery conditions—whether wet, on ice, or off road.
In fact, more recent 4MATIC systems can allocate 100% of engine torque to either the front or rear wheels. The increased traction from these systems offers better handling through corners. It also provides additional safety because you’re less likely to lose grip when travelling fast through corners.
What are some of the common issues?
While Mercedes Benz 4MATIC has been a reliable all-wheel drive system, it’s not impervious to problems. With regular servicing and maintenance however, we can prevent and address issues such as:
Leaking seals
Over time, the seals in the transfer case can become worn. This causes them to crack or become dry and in turn leak. If you don’t replace these, fluid loss can damage the inner workings of the transfer case.
Signs that your seals may need to be replaced include leaking fluid and unusual grinding or clunking noises.
Transfer case bearing failure
When the bearings inside the transfer case fail, this causes a grinding noise which can often be mistaken for a faulty wheel bearing. If this occurs, the entire transfer case needs to be replaced so speak with us as soon as possible for a solution.
