Mercedes Benz: GLA Class

The Mercedes Benz GLA-Class is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV, and first appeared on the market in 2013. It is available as a front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and in both diesel and petrol engine variants up until the latest 2020 model when the diesel engine was removed from the range. The GLA is in the top 3 best-selling SUV’s in its size category (2019 data), with some of the main competition being the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1.

Common Issues

The GLA is an extremely popular car and remains a Mercedes best seller. With regular upkeep and servicing the your GLA can be a comfortable and reliable luxury SUV for many years. Here are some common issues that can occur with the GLA range.

Camshaft Failure

Mercedes issued a recall for some 2015 petrol models in the GLA range because of a fault in the camshaft. This could cause engine stalls, a rough idle or lack of power and If not repaired correctly this could ultimately cause the engine to fail.

Oil Leaks

There have been multiple reports of oil leaks with various models in the GLA range. This is usually caused by faulty, damaged or worn gasket seals. Leaking oil in small amounts might not stop you from driving your car, but If left un-repaired excessive oil loss can cause serious engine damage. If you are experiencing oil loss, then the mechanics at Auto Studio can service your vehicle and identify the source of the problem.

Fuel Lines

There were numerous reports that some GLA 2015 models have had problems with the high-pressure fuel lines, causing them to crack and leak fuel. This can lead to lowered vehicle performance, increased fuel consumption and has the potential to become a fire risk. If you are concerned about your fuel system, then book into Auto Studio’s RAA approved garage for servicing and inspection.

Run flat tyres

Not classed as a problem, but certainly worth noting are the run flat tyres. As the name suggests, these tyres are designed to run when flat, therefore eliminating the need to carry a spare but they do have some limitations. When driving with a flat tyre, you cannot exceed a speed of 80km, or travel a distance further than 80km. This can of course become problematic for long distance travel.
