MINI COOPER

The MINI Cooper (also known as the MINI Hatch or the MINI One) is an extremely popular small car that was released in 2000 after BMW took over the Rover company. Since the take over, there have been 3 generations of the Mini Cooper released.

The Mini Hatch comes in either a 3 or 5 door option and can be powered by a 1.5 Litre 3 cylinder or 2.0 Litre 4-cylinder petrol or diesel engine. A fully electric model is also available, but you will only find this in the 3-door range.

Common Problems

As with all cars, regular servicing and maintenance is needed to ensure your car is running at optimum performance and remains reliable and safe to drive. With appropriate services your MINI Cooper should be enjoyable and reliable for many years, but there are some common problems to be aware of.

Automatic Transmission Failure

There have been many reports of the automatic transmission failing, though this has been more prominent in the first-generation MINI’s. Regular routine transmission servicing is the best prevention method and is something that should be looked at as part of your regular service. Common signs of transmission troubles can include grinding or shaking sounds, trouble changing or engaging gears, slipping out of gear or burning smells. If you are experiencing any of these with your car, the experienced mechanics at Auto Studio can service your vehicle and identify and repair the problem for you.

Power Steering Pump

A common problem with many of the MINI Hatch models is for the power steering pump to fail. This is also unfortunately a problem that can occur with little to no warning, though you will likely notice some of the following symptoms if there is a problem with your power steering. If your steering becomes rigid, stiff or hard to turn, then it may be a sign that your power steering pump needs to be replaced.

Clutch Failure

Mini cooper clutches have been known to fail at low K’s, this is a problem that can be more prominent in cars that are routinely driven in heavy traffic. If your clutch is feeling soft and spongy or you are having trouble shifting gears this could be a warning sign that your clutch may need to be replaced. Other signs can include a burning smell, a sticky pedal or noises while changing gears or lack of power when travelling up hill. If you have any concerns about your car, then the team at Auto Studio be happy to help identify the problem and ensure your vehicle is driving safely and at its best.

Timing Chain

Over time it is possible for the timing chain to become loose with general wear and tear, this can lead to the chain to snapping and causing major engine damage. It is important that the timing chain is inspected regularly and replaced before any potential problems occur. Ask the friendly and experienced team at Auto Studio about your timing chain at your next service.
